First, line your 2x4's together. (I glued mine together with some wood glue and let it dry, but this is optional... you can just keep your wood as separate pieces).
Apply your vinyl to the boards. Make sure all the edges are sealed to the wood.
Paint your wood. I wanted a really worn look, so I liked to see the paint strokes. If you don't, just do a few coats.
Let the paint dry a little, and peal off the vinyl.
If you look close on mine... you can see some of the paint ran under the vinyl (especially where the creases are in the wood). I think it adds to my worn look, so I loved it!
Then sand your entire project.
